Satan Tests Jesus

Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13

After John baptized Him, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert that’s between Jerusalem and Jericho. He stayed there and fasted for forty days and forty nights while Satan tested Him. He did not eat anything, and at the end of this time, He was hungry.

Then Satan said to Jesus, “If You’re really the Son of God, the Anointed One, prove it. Order these stones to turn into bread.”

But Jesus said to Satan, “The scripture says, ‘Man does not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’.”

Then Satan took Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the highest point of the Temple. “If You are really the Son of God, the Anointed One, then jump off! For the scripture says, ‘God will order His angels to take care of You’. It also says, ‘They will hold You up with their hands so You won’t even hit Your foot against a rock’.”

But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Don’t put the Lord your God to the test’.”

And again, Satan took Jesus to a high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “I’ll give You authority over all these kingdoms and their glory. It has been handed over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. It will all be Yours. All You have to do is bow down and worship me.”

Then Jesus answered for the last time, “Get away from me, Satan! The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and no one else’.”

When Satan finished testing Him that time, he left Jesus alone for a while, and angels came and served Him. During Jesus’ life, Satan tested him with every sin that people have ever done…or even thought of doing. But Jesus resisted Satan’s testing every time and never sinned.
