Creation of the Heavens and Earth

Genesis 1:1-2:3

This is the story of the Creation of the Heavens and the Earth.

In the beginning of all things, when God was creating the heavens and the earth, the earth had no shape and it was empty. Darkness covered the surface of the deep waters. The spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light.” And it was so. And God separated the light from the darkness. He called the light, “Day,” and he called the darkness, “Night.” And God saw that it was good. The evening passed and the morning came, that was the first day.

Then God said, “Let there be an empty space to separate the waters above from the waters below.” And it was so. And God named the empty space “sky.” The evening passed and the morning came, that was the second day.

Then God said, “Let the waters below be gathered together into one place and let the dry ground appear.” And it was so. And God named the gathered waters the seas, and the dry ground he named the land. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land be covered with all the beautiful trees and every kind of green plant that is good to eat.” And God blessed them so that they would multiply after their kind. And God saw that it was good.  The evening passed and the morning came, that was the third day.

Then God said, “Let the sky be filled with all the different lights: the greater light, the Sun, to rule the day, the lesser light, the moon, to rule the night and all the stars.” And it was so.  And He said, “Let these lights mark the days and the seasons and the events.” And God saw that it was good. The evening passed and the morning came, that was the fourth day.

Then God said, “Let the sky be filled with all the flying creatures, and let the seas be filled with all the swimming creatures.” And God blessed them so that they would multiply after their kinds. And God saw that it was good. The evening passed and the morning came, that was the fifth day.

Then God said, “Let the land be filled with all the animals: the wild animals, the domestic animals, and all the creatures that creep along on the ground.” And it was so.  And God blessed them so that they would multiply after their kind. And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our own image, let us give them dominion over all of creation.” So God made man male and female, commanded him to rule over all creation. And God blessed them so that they would multiply and fill the earth. And God gave to them every green plant for food.  And God saw that it was very good. The evening passed and the morning came, that was the sixth day.

On the seventh day, God had already finished all His work of creation, so he rested.  And that is why God set the seventh day apart because that is the day he rested from all his work of creation.

And that is the end of the story.
